This information is subject to change. (current version is: v1.01)

Ad hoc and SymSMB overview.

WiFi wireless networking supports two basic modes - so-called "infrastructure" mode and "ad-hoc" mode. Ad-hoc mode allows a Wi-Fi network to function without a central point such as wireless router or access point.

This publication discribes configuration of Ad hoc mode for Windows XP computer and Series 60 3rd edition mobile phone with WLAN support for usage with phone application SymSMB 2.00. There is no difference from configuration point of view for using SymSMB v.1.10 in Ad hoc mode.

Configuration of Ad hoc for sharing computer Internet connection for using it on a phone is out of scope of this publication.

Wireless Equivalency Protocol (WEP) settings are not being configured at this time because it's easier to get an Ad hoc wireless network running smoothly before attempting to configure WEP data encryption. The decision on whether or not to use WEP should be based on your environment. In most cases, for optimum protection and security, after your Ad hoc network is running properly, you should return to Wireless Network Properties and specify WEP settings.

Although exist a few different approaches for Ad hoc configuration, it is highly recommended that at least at initial stage users will follow offered configuration parameters. As soon as you became more familiar with configuration and using Ad hoc mode, you may try to use different configuration scenarios as well.

As you may know, SymSMB is a transport-independent application. That is why when we are talking about using SymSMB in Ad hoc mode it should be clear that from SymSMB point of view there is no any difference between this mode and others. SymSMB to operate only needs to have an Access Point configurated on phone and outside of SymSMB own settings. You will see that main preparations for using Ad hoc mode need to be done on computer and phone itself and in SymSMB you only need to point out on right Access Point, that's it!

This publication contains only Ad hoc specific information, so please feel free to use User Guide, How to use and How to install manuals for additional information about configuration the foloowing settings in teminology of SymSMB v.2.00, such as Accounts, Shared Folders and Network Drives. That also means that it will be much better if you do have already successful experience of usage SymSMB in regular " Infrastructure mode" prior to use "Ad hoc mode".
